The following is an excerpt from a FEEDSTUFF MAGAZINE article (75-11/17).
PORK Edited by J.D. Kendall
Sorghum Varieties in Hog Rations Tested at Arkansas
In a test to see whether the addition of a mixture of enzymes would improve the availability of energy in grain sorghum, the researchers added two pounds of the dry enzyme (MSE) per ton of ration. The addition of the enzyme did improve the performance of the pigs fed either yellow grain sorghum or corn rations, they reported. The use of the enzyme at the rate of two pounds per ton in a starter ration improved the efficiency of feed utilization by 13%. In this trial, a brown seed coat grain sorgum was used, they added.
The same enzyme was used with a brown grain sorghum in growing-finishing rations. Improvement was noted in pig performance at the rate of one pound of enzyme per ton. A better improvement in the rate of gain was obtained when two pounds of enzyme were added per ton of feed. At the 4 lb. per ton level, a 5% improvement was obtained in efficiency of feed utilization.
A digestibility study was conducted with the same enzyme added to a brown seed coat grain sorghum. Digestibility of both energy and protein was improved with the addition of the enzyme. Digestibility of protein was improved more than digestibility of energy.
